Time marches on...
"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" Psalm 90:12.
Taking time to reflect on the culmination of one year and the beginning of a new one is good for our souls. For one thing, it causes us to realize, that though we as humans may be able to manipulate many aspects of our lives (i.e. science, medicine, etc.), one thing that we are utterly incapable of doing is stopping or even slowing the passage of time.
Psalm 103 compares the span of man's life to the steadfast love of the LORD. Man fades like the flower in a field and is forgotten, but God's love is from everlasting to everlasting.
Reflecting on the passage of time should not be something that is depressing to us; but, rather, it should energize us. We are not God; we are not in control; God is. In meditating on our transience and numbering our days, we cannot help but look outside of ourselves, and to Christ and His work. In this, we can be comforted, because we know the end of the story: Christ has won the battle, and He will call us to Himself
